SHOT Business Remington 1911 R1 Article

I just got the most recent copy of SHOT Business and on page 5 (June/July 2010 issue) is an article on the Remington R1 1911. I couldn’t find the article on their website so I scanned it. Below is the context of the article from SHOT Business Magazine:

The 1911 is one of the most famous firearms designs of all time from one of the industry’s most renowned designers, John M. Browning. A single-action, semi-automatic, magazine-fed, recoil-operated handgun chambered for the .45 ACP, it has left an indelible mark on battlefields and at competitions all over the world for nearly a century.

In 1917, the U.S. Ordnance Department issued an order to Remington-UMC to manufacture 500,000 1911s for the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. The first Remington-UMC-produced 1911 pistols were delivered in August 1918. On November 11, 1918, the Armistice ending WWI was signed and the contract was suspended. In all, Remington-UMC produced 21,677 1911s.

Now, Remington is bringing the R1 back.

The 1911 R1 is an A1 variant of the 1911 with modern upgrades. Like the original 1911, the 1911 R1 has a flat mainspring housing, short trigger and double diamond grips. Devotees of the 1911 will appreciate the modern enhancements of the 1911 R1, such as a flared and lowered ejection port, beveled magazine well, loaded chamber indicator, high-profile dovetailed single-dot front sight and two-dot rear sights, and a match grade stainless-steel barrel and barrel bushing. The firearm also sports a Series 80-style firing pin block safety. The 1911 R1 will be shipped in a custom carry case with two 7 round magazines and a barrel-bushing wrench.

The New 1911 R1 will be manufactured at Remington’s Ilion, New York, facility and will be available through select independent dealers beginning this month.

We are hoping that we will see a shipment with a few of the new 1911s soon!Renington 1911 R1 featured in SHOT Business Magazine

Bought one today at Bass Pro Shop. Went in looking for a S&W government spec 1911 that I had seen on line and fell in love with this one. Maple grips, stainless barrel, but finished in blue steel. I like the look and finish even better than the more expensive all-stainless S&W Centennial model M1911. Feels great in my hand, and I can’t wait to burn some serious rounds through it. I carried and used government issue .45s for 30 years, and this one has the same feel and balance, better sights, and much nicer machining. You’ll like it.

  3. Was able to pick up the enhanced R1 at the Allen gun show N of Dallas 7/24. It being my first gun purches Im super excited. Thanks
